4/22/2005 100-Year Celebration
...to the Procter & Gamble Kansas City, Kansas, Soap Plant History homepage. Before we dig into our 100-year history, here's a little current information about our plant.
Plant Information
In 1904, our plant was the first Procter & Gamble manufacturing facility to be built outside Cincinnati, the location of our corporate headquarters. Soap plants in our location were a natural outgrowth of the packing house industry because some of the waste products from the meat packers were used in the production of soap and soap products. The midwest location and the nearby rivers were a natural fit for transportation of both raw materials and finished product. Of interest is the housing shortage at the time the plant was built, which caused many early employees to live in tents along the river until homes could be built. The plant is currently located on 64 acres along the Kansas River in Kansas City, KS. At our site, we manufacture liquid dishwashing detergents----and chemical intermediates for use in our own products and for sale to other companies.
Employee Information
Plant employees participate in profit-sharing, stock investment, and other benefit plans. P&G's profit-sharing plan was started in 1887 and is the oldest such plan in the United States. Employees are also covered by a tuition refund plan, group life insurance, disability income benefits, and generous vacation and holiday benefits, in addition to high quality health care insurance.
And now on to our 100-year history (and enjoy a little Kansas City jazz and blues along the way)...
